BJP-backed candidates sweep ZP chief polls, win 66 seats
Months ahead of the high-stake UP assembly elections, the BJP received a shot in the arm as its supported candidates won 46 out of 53 seats in the Zila Panchayat chairman elections, the polling for which was conducted on Saturday. With this, the BJP and its ally Apna Dal (S) backed candidates won 67 seats, of which 21 -- including Varanasi and Gorakhpur -- were won unopposed.
